This John Galliano skirt is from the autumn-winter 1985 collection, titled ‘The Ludic Game’. It holds special significance as it was Galliano’s first commercial collection with a runway show at fashion week. The skirt was worn in the closing look of the show and was paired with a matching inverted kimono.

The skirt is made of flannelette and adorned with a large blue and white vulture print designed by Luiven Rivas-Sanchez. It is calf length and designed in a wrap style with two inside buttons for fastening, providing the option to leave one undone to drape the fabric as demonstrated in the show. The vulture print is inspired by the theme of the collection, which draws from Angela Carter’s 1984 novel “Nights at the Circus” and its heroine “Fevvers”, who is depicted as half bird and half woman.

One of the notable features of this skirt is its rare label reading ‘Galliano 1’, the first label used for commercial production by the designer. This adds to the garment’s significance and collectibility for museums and collectors alike.
